Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are native throughout all of Illinois and can be seen commonly in rural and suburban areas of Kane and DuPage counties. Groundhogs can be a real nuisance if they decide to make their homes in your property. They are expert diggers, and love to feast on landscaping. Groundhogs can remove 700 pounds of soil to complete a burrow that may be 4 - 5 feet deep and 25 to 30 feet long with multiple chambers. These extensive dens may have 2 or more openings. Groundhogs are the largest members of the squirrel family. They can weigh up to 15 pounds and stand 2 feet high, and have brown to gray fur. Though they are usually seen on the ground, they can climb trees and are also capable swimmers. Groundhogs are the bane of many a gardener. They can decimate a plot while voraciously feeding during the summer and fall seasons. Groundhogs are fond of garden beans, peas, herbs, strawberries, pansies, and impatiens. In an agricultural area the Woodchuck can do considerable damage to crops. Their love of tender, succulent plants can be the destruction of landscaping for private homeowners and businesses. With their ability to move a lot of earth while burrowing, they can cave in driveways, pavement, and parking lots, among other things.
