These are pictures of one of several groundhog releases we did in conjunction with Biologists at the Lincoln Park Zoo and staff at the Willowbrook Wildlife Haven. We capture the groundhogs from jobs we are hired for, Willowbrook veterinarians look them over and fit them with a tracking device supplied by the Lincoln Park Zoo, and then the groundhog is picked up from Willowbrook and taken to one of our private release sites where we and the Lincoln Park Zoo biologists release them and they begin tracking them. Research will indicate how well relocated groundhogs do, why their numbers have been declining and what factors are causing that decline, and exactly what do the groundhogs do and where do they go when they are relocated. It will also show whether breeding programs with release into the wild would be beneficial to the species. Above, Liza and fellow biologist discuss the release. (top left) Brad sets up one of our cameras as Liza prepares to open the cage (top right) and Brad watches as Liza opens the cage to release the groundhog (left) |
Cage open, groundhog is not coming out on its own ;) (top left) Brad gives a little tap to the back of the cage (top right) and then pulls its fuzzy blanket out in an attempt to get it to come out (left) |
There she goes! (left) the groundhog makes a run for it! (middle) and Liza immediately begins tracking its signal to make sure everything is functioning correctly, and it is! (below)
